Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with misalignments of the jaw and teeth. Such misalignments can often be successfully corrected during childhood and adolescence, while the jaw is still growing. Thanks to modern, aesthetically advanced treatments, however, misalignments can also be effectively treated in adults.
At our dental practice, we offer the full range of modern orthodontic treatments. From traditional braces to invisible teeth alignment with Invisalign, we find the right solution for every need.
We invite you to visit one of our orthodontists in Zurich for a consultation on how we can correct existing issues and enhance your smile.
What treatments does orthodontics encompass?
In orthodontics, we distinguish between functional and aesthetic issues. For many people, the latter is the reason for seeking correction of misalignments in the visible front teeth area. If you’re dissatisfied with the appearance of your teeth and would like a more even smile, this can often be achieved through targeted corrections to tooth alignment.
From a medical perspective, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems such as craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) are a key focus of orthodontics.
Misaligned teeth and jaws can lead to significant discomfort, ranging from tooth, jaw, head, and neck pain to chronic tension, tinnitus, dizziness, or sleep disturbances. This is where orthodontics intervenes to restore balance. Using removable or fixed appliances, we correct the misalignment and harmonize the movements of the masticatory system.
Another important component of orthodontics is splint therapy. Here, we address issues such as teeth grinding by using custom-made bite splints. This provides lasting relief for the temporomandibular joints and protects the teeth from damage.
What does orthodontics offer for children?
Many dental and jaw misalignments become apparent as early as childhood. At this stage, the jaw is still growing, which allows us to use orthodontics to guide its development. Orthodontic treatment in children prevents problems later in life that would otherwise require much greater effort to correct.
At our orthodontic practice in Zurich, we take extra time to explain the purpose and goals of treatment to our young patients in a way that’s appropriate for their age. We guide children through the entire developmental phase so that they can go through life with a carefree, happy, and healthy smile.
How does orthodontic treatment work?
The decision to proceed with orthodontic treatment is made by the orthodontist in consultation with you following a thorough evaluation. You will receive detailed advice on the treatment options available in orthodontics and the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
Depending on the findings, treatment is usually carried out using fixed or removable appliances. These are custom-made in an orthodontic laboratory and then fitted and adjusted by the treating orthodontist.
As a general rule, braces should be worn around the clock. Removable appliances and aligners can be taken out for eating and cleaning. The appliance gently and gradually moves the teeth into the desired position.
Once the treatment goal is achieved, a retention phase follows using retention splints or fixed retainers. The retention phase serves to stabilize the teeth in their new position and prevent them from shifting back.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
The duration of orthodontic treatment can range from half a year to several years. To ensure that treatment does not take longer than necessary, active cooperation—especially from children—is very important in orthodontics. Fixed appliances can be advantageous here, as they work around the clock and do not require the patient to take any initiative to wear them.
The retention phase usually lasts just as long as the orthodontic treatment itself, but at least one year.
Orthodontics: What Costs Can You Expect?
The costs of orthodontic treatment can vary greatly from person to person. They depend on the type of treatment, the appliances used, and the duration of treatment.
During the initial consultation, your orthodontist will explain exactly what orthodontic options are available in your case and what the respective costs would be. The decision on a treatment method will then be made together with you.
FAQ
TMJ problems are usually caused by a misalignment of the jaw. This disrupts the complex movements of the masticatory system, leading to excessive or improper stress on the jaw. Other possible causes of TMJ problems include misaligned teeth, poorly fitted dentures, or teeth grinding (bruxism).
If left untreated, misaligned teeth and jaws can lead to chronic pain and tension. These symptoms are often not limited to the jaw area but can radiate to the head, neck, back, and even down to the knees. Other signs of misaligned teeth or jaws may include tinnitus, dizziness, sleep disturbances, neck stiffness, earaches, or unexplained headaches.
In orthodontics, we aim to treat children as early as possible, since their jaws are still growing and this allows us to intervene with optimal corrective measures. Depending on the type of malocclusion, treatment for children usually begins around the ages of 9 to 12. Significant anomalies can be corrected in orthodontics as early as age 4 as part of early intervention.
At our orthodontic practice in Zurich, we offer, among other things, Invisalign treatment. This involves the use of clear aligners that are very discreet to wear in everyday life. Even when it comes to fixed braces, there are discreet solutions available today, such as models with clear brackets or lingual braces, which are placed invisibly on the inside of the teeth.
Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign is particularly comfortable and discreet for the patient. The correction is achieved using clear aligners, which are worn for approximately 14 days each and gradually move the teeth into their desired position. The treatment plan is computer-aided, and the final result can be simulated in advance. Maintenance is straightforward, as the aligners can be removed for eating and cleaning.
In general, a well-fitted orthodontic appliance should not cause any pain. The metal brackets may feel uncomfortable at first or rub against your gums. Until you get used to the new situation, you can cover the metal brackets with dental wax, for example.
The teeth are moved by gentle pressure, which may feel slightly uncomfortable at first. You should wear removable braces conscientiously. The more consistently you follow the recommended wear time, the faster any initial discomfort from the pressure should subside.
If the discomfort persists, please feel free to schedule an appointment at short notice at our orthodontic practice in Zurich.
